Ventura High School is the first public high school, and serves the western half of the city. The eastern half is served by its sister school and chief athletic rival, Buena High. It's a member of the Channel League, and its mascot is the cougar.
Ventura High is home to some art, including Atoms for Peace, and a theater built in the 1920s in art deco style.
VHS used to be on the campus of Cabrillo Middle School, as the current campus was once the location of Ventura College.
