fencing protects delicate species
San Buenaventura State Beach is located near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and San Jon Road. Owned by the state as a part of the California State Parks system, it also includes camping sites along with the day use activities. Here you'll find a broad open strand with lifeguards on duty during the busy summer season. This beach features a fairly large day use parking lot, showers to rinse off, and restrooms.
The back beach and dune area are actively being restored by State Park staff. Fencing limits human activities in sensitive area that are roped off to protect Western Snowy Plovers and Least Terns and beach plants that cannot tolerate being walked on. How does this affect your beach-going day? Not too much if you're headed to the water. Just walk through the marked area and you're at the beach. If you like bird watching or enjoy wildflowers, this fenced area is a major enhancement. Look for Beach Bur, Beach Evening Primrose, and Sand Verbena, just to name a few.
