Pacific View Mall is the largest shopping center in Ventura. It used to be known as Buenaventura Mall, but the name was changed at the end of a 10 year long, incremental remodel.
There are four anchor stores in the mall: Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, and Target. Before the remodel, there were only two anchors, Penney's and Broadway (later bought by Macy's). By expanding, this brought on Mall Wars, as it was known in the paper. The other two stores were stolen from The Esplanade in Oxnard — Sears and Robinson's-May (also bought by Macy's). Oxnard didn't take kindly to their anchor stores moving out, so they sued Ventura. Following American tradition, Ventura quickly countersued. In the end, Ventura won the day, and the old Esplanade was turned into a ghost town. Eventually, the Esplanade was turned into a long strip mall with many profitable stores like The Home Depot, and everyone was happy. Macy's bought its competition, and Robinson's-May was turned into a two story Target store.
The name is somewhat of a misnomer — you can't actually see the ocean from the mall. Had they completed a walkway up to the top level of the mall, you could have seen it, but that part of the project was cancelled.
