Channel Islands National Park is made up of five of the Channel Islands, three of which you can see in Ventura on a clear day. It first became a National Monument on April 26, 1938, was upgraded to a National Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and finally became a National Park on March 5, 1980.
The one bit of the National Park on the mainland is right here in Ventura: the
Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center, in the harbor. There are models of tide pools, and a real-live (well, used to be alive) stuffed island fox.
